SAN FRANCISCO PRIDE
San Francisco

In the 1970s, the city became a center of the gay rights movement, with the emergence of The Castro as an urban gay village, the election of Harvey Milk to the Board of Supervisors, and his assassination, along with that of Mayor George Moscone, in 1978.

The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake caused destruction and loss of life throughout the Bay Area.

HOTEL & VISITOR GUIDE

General/Travel Page

Every year at the beginning of June, 500 rainbow flags are hoisted the length of Market Street and San Francisco explodes with queerness. For a city known as the “Gay Mecca” for the other eleven months of the year, June is Queer Heaven. The International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, the Queer Arts Festival and, of course, San Francisco's vibrant club, bar and community scene leave hardly any time to grab a bite to eat in the restaurant capital of the USA.

The energy reaches a crescendo the last weekend of June.

On Saturday night, 200,000 revelers party in the Castro into the small hours. Next morning, the roar of 500 motorcycles heralds the start of the Pride Parade, a dazzling cavalcade of diversity.

The streets are lined 12 deep and 3 high as over a million people cheer the contingents on. Then it's on to Celebration at Civic Center. Twelve stages – simultaneously – entertain the crowds with world famous acts and a plethora of diverse stages.
